Shelf print of Philip Guston’s Untitled (City), 1968.

Guston’s painted city is made up of eight cartoon-like tall buildings in pink, white, red and black. A pale white oval sun hangs over them in a pink sky. As pink was one of Guston’s favourite colours to work in, we’ve also made the back of the print pink, with the exhibition title and dates, artwork credit line and Tate’s dot logo printed in black.

Measuring 17 x 17 cm, the artworks for the shelf prints are printed onto 1400 micron archival mount board card, so they’re sturdy enough to stand or lean on a shelf or mantlepiece without a frame.

The shelf prints are available to celebrate the arrival of the Philip Guston exhibition at Tate Modern, and are a great way to enjoy some of the artist’s smaller artworks in a ready-to-display format. The collection of six prints takes inspiration from Guston’s studio and display of The Small Panels, 1968-70.

About the artist

Philip Guston (1913 – 1980) was a Canadian American artist, who worked in painting, drawing, printmaking and murals. The son of Jewish immigrants who had escaped persecution in what is now Ukraine, Guston was raised in the United States. Along with Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, Guston’s abstract works in the 1950s and 60s made him one of the most celebrated American abstract painters of the time. During the social and political upheavals of the late 1960s, Guston rejected abstraction, and instead developed a practice involving large-scale paintings and comic-like figures, some in white hoods representing evil and the everyday perpetrators of racism.
