Pissarro’s depiction of Charing Cross Bridge is dominated by an expanse of cloudy sky, giving the painting a sense of openness and space. The bridge itself is secondary to the light playing on the river underneath, and the many iconic landmarks present (including the Houses of Parliament, and Cleopatra’s needle) can be seen as background details. Although he used some divisionism techniques (using touches of complementary colours to project light onto the bridge), he returned to loose, quick Impressionistic brushstrokes for the majority of the painting, to capture the light and atmosphere of the setting.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist painter, and later mentor of Cézanne and Gauguin. He moved to London briefly during the Franco- Prussian war, and returned to visit several times in the 1890s. A pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement, Pissarro was the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.
