Rolling Stones Lips vintage t-shirt

This vintage Rolling Stones tour t-shirt has been sourced in Los Angeles, USA, by British contemporary vintage company Unified Goods, for our 2020 Andy Warhol exhibition collection. The t-shirt is from the The Stones’ 1990 Urban Jungle European tour, just 3 years after Warhol’s death.

Although Andy Warhol did not design the famous Lips and Tongue graphic (that was British art designer John Pasche in 1970), Warhol is closely linked with the band. The original cover artwork for The Rolling Stones’ 1971 Sticky Fingers album was conceived by Warhol, then photographed and designed by his studio, The Factory. Mick Jagger and Warhol were famously friends, and Jagger’s bad boy image was turned on its head when he was represented in a softer light in Warhol's 1975 screenprint series based on a collection of polaroids he took of Jagger at his house.

A central figure in pop art, Andy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most significant and influential artists of the later twentieth century. In the 1960s he began to explore the growing interplay between mass culture and the visual arts, and his constant experimentation with new processes for the dissemination of art played a pivotal role in redefining access to culture and art as we know it today.

For our 2020 Andy Warhol exhibition, Unified Goods have sourced and selected a collection of archival t-shirts and accessories linked to Warhol and his influence on contemporary art and culture.
