The woman in this portrait is the Italian dancer Giovanna Francesca Antonio Guiseppe Zanerini, who performed under the name Giovanna Baccelli. She was a principal ballerina in London at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, and Gainsborough painted this picture of her at the pinnacle of her career. She is wearing the costume and make up that she wore during her performance in Les Amants Surpris. She stands in a balletic pose, and when it was first exhibited it was described as a true likeness of its sitter: ‘as the Original, light airy and elegant’.

Thomas Gainsborough (1727 – 1788) was a British painter, draughtsman and printmaker. Best known for his portraiture, he was the most successful artist in this genre by the mid-1770s. Whilst portraits earned him his living, he preferred to paint landscapes. He was a founding member or the Royal Academy of Art, but fell out with them over the hanging of his pictures several times, and refused to exhibit there after 1784, staging exhibitions in his own studio instead.
