Additional Information

Veronica Ryan has generously produced A Wind Blows Patterns I, 2022, a limited edition print to coincide with the exhibition, Radical Landscapes, at Tate Liverpool, 5 May – 4 September 2022. This piece, edition number 50, is presented in a whitewashed maple frame.

Ryan, who is celebrated for her sculptural work, was the first artist to undertake a residency at Hepworth’s Palais de Dance studio in St Ives, and in 2021, was commissioned to respond to the work of Hepworth as part of The Hepworth Wakefield’s 10th anniversary programme. As part of her commission, Ryan cast Magnolia seed pods in bronze, which can be seen in the limited edition, A Wind Blows Patterns I, 2022. The Magnolia pods were found by Ryan whilst exploring Hepworth’s garden in St Ives a few years prior and remind her of soursop fruits, which Ryan first tasted when her family briefly returned to Montserrat from the UK where they moved when she was an infant. The arrangement of the pods is incidental, as if they are being moved and scattered by the wind. The limited edition was made using traditional etching techniques and is Ryan’s return to producing prints since studying print-making at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham UK, as part of her BA (Hons) Fine Art degree.

Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

Veronica Ryan OBE (b. 1956, Plymouth, Montserrat) has worked in a wide range of materials including bronze, plaster, fabric, string, marble, paper and fruit skins to create sculptural objects and assemblages. Referencing organic forms, such as fruit, vegetables and seeds, and the containers and modular units used to transport them, her work examines the psychology and semantics of perception, and experiences of place, home, memory, and loss.

Ryan’s first solo exhibition was at Arnolfini, Bristol in 1987. Other important solo shows have been presented at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, UK (1988); Camden Arts Centre, London, UK (1995); Salena Gallery, Brooklyn, US (2005); Tate St Ives, Cornwall, UK (2000, 2005 and 2017); The Mattress Factory, Pittsburgh, US (2011); The Hepworth Wakefield, UK (2017); and Spike Island, Bristol, UK (2021). In June 2020, Hackney Council commissioned Ryan to create sculptures celebrating Hackney’s Windrush Generation - the first permanent public artworks to do so in the UK. Ryan was awarded an OBE for services to art in 2021 and has been nominated for the Turner Prize 2022. Her work is in public collections including the Arts Council Collection, Contemporary Art Society, Sainsbury’s Collection, Tate Collection, The Hepworth Wakefield, and the Weltkunst Collection at the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Ryan currently lives and works in both New York and the U.K.
