École de Paris is the French term for the School of Paris – a phrase that emerged to describe the art of the early years of the twentieth century, when Paris became a magnet for artists from all over the world. The French capital became the setting for the principal innovations of modern art, including fauvism, cubism, abstract art and surrealism. The two ‘chiefs’ of the School were Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and from 1904 to 1933 the School of Paris also included Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Chaïm Soutine, Constantin Brancusi, Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky.
