Léger trained as an architect, and served as an engineer in the French army during WWI, so seems natural that industrial structures would interest him. Here, Léger combines a number of styles and influences, such as Cubist style figures, representational stairways and ladders, and abstract and geometric brightly coloured shapes like those in The Disc, 1918. These shapes seem to both highlight and detract from the structure of the tugboat being described.

French painter and designer Fernand Léger, was born in Agentan, Normandy in 1881. His work encompasses cubist and semi-abstract styles, and in his later years he also worked in design for the stage. Léger also became an active advocate for peace, and in 1948 became a founder-member of the National Council of the World Peace Movement.
