O’Keeffe started painting New York city in 1925, the tall buildings echoing her early works of canyons in Texas. New York Street with Moon is a classic example of this, where O’Keeffe has abstracted the shapes of the buildings, depicting them in earthy tones set against the moonlit sky. She continued to paint New York scenes until the onset of the Great Depression, when the utopian spirit of the city vanished.

Georgia O’Keeffe is best known for her paintings of magnified flowers, animal skulls and New Mexico desert landscapes. O’Keeffe made her debut in 1916 and was immediately recognised as a trailblazing artist, while today her legacy as an American art icon and a pioneer of twentieth-century art is widely recognised.
