Additional Information

As part of his Auto-Destructive and Auto-Creative works, Metzger encouraged artists to collaborate with scientists and engineers, to produce artworks that would change over time. Technology is central to Liquid Crystal Environment, a large work that is made up of five projectors, each with a single slide containing liquid crystals. The projectors have rotating polarising filters and a cooling and heating system that cause the liquid crystal to liquefy or freeze, creating psychedelic effects of shifting colour and form.

Please note that the largest available size option for this print is 60 x 80 cm.

Gustav Metzger (1926 – 2017) was a German artist and political activist, who lived and worked in East London, UK. Evacuated to Britain as a child under the Refugee Children Movement in 1939, Metzger studied later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, funded by a grant from the UK Jewish community. The horrors of the Second World War had a lasting effect on Metzger, and he became known for his political protest art. To highlight the destruction caused by war, he created the Auto-Destructive Art movement in 1959, and from the 1970s onwards, he made works that warned about the damage inflicted on the environment by global warming and the loss of natural resources. Several of his artworks form part of the Tate collection, and are regularly on display at Tate Modern.
