Additional Information

According to Beatrix Potter’s famous tale, after the tailor delivers the magnificent cherry-coloured wedding coat to the mayor, he becomes the most celebrated tailor in all of Gloucester. Renowned for his precision and skill, in the text accompanying this beautiful illustration Potter writes that ‘his button-holes were the greatest triumph of it all. The stitches of those button-holes were so neat—so neat—I wonder how they could be stitched by an old man in spectacles, with crooked old fingers, and a tailor's thimble. The stitches of those button-holes were so small—so small—they looked as if they had been made by little mice!’

Helen Beatrix Potter (1866 –1943) was a British writer, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist. Potter's study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology, but she is best known for the successful series of children's books the wrote and illustrated, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. 22 of her illustrations for The Tailor of Gloucester form part of Tate’s collection, and can be viewed by appointment in Tate Britain’s Prints and Drawings Room.
