Additional Information

In this painting, Colquhoun explored the surrealist idea of the ‘double image’, describing it as ‘a pictoral pun’. Named after a monster from Greek mythology, who lived in narrow channel of water and devoured passing sailors, Colquhoun said that the idea was suggested by her view of her own body in the bath. The image can be seen in both ways – as seascape or body.

80 x 60 cm is the largest print size option we are able to offer for this artwork.

Ithell Colquhoun (1906 – 1988) was a British artist, poet, author and occultist. A member of the British Surrealist Group for a time, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, exhibited with the London Group and created works and techniques exploring ‘psychomorphologies’ – attempts to capture psychic space in painting. She was eventually expelled from the Surrealist Group after refusing to renounce occultism, a subject she became a recognised authority on.
