English painter John Roger Herbet entered the Royal Academy Schools, London in 1826. He began exhibiting portraits at the Royal Academy in 1830 and until 1836 made his living chiefly through portraiture and book illustration. In 1840, he converted to Roman Catholicism with his religious beliefs dictating the subjects of his work. In 1886 he retired as an academician although he continued to exhibit at the Academy until 1889.
