Lubaina Himid’s Men in Drawers series used drawers from an installation by fellow artist Susan Walsh. Exploring the nature of lost and found items and people, Himid says that ‘Men in Drawers are meant to be displayed so that they come as a surprise.’ She writes ‘I imagine these men getting dressed, in carefully chosen shirts and ties, socks and sweaters. The everyday process of being who you are. Drawers are the epitome of the chance encounter.’

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
