Marina Abramović method t-shirt

This white t-shirt, designed in collaboration with the Marina Abramović Institute, features a checklist of five steps of The Abramović Method – a series of daily mindfulness tasks that the artist uses to prepare herself for long-duration performance art pieces.

The text on the t-shirt reads:

mutual gaze

Sitting on opposite chairs, look at each other. Motionless.

slow walk

Walk as slowly as possible. Starting with your left leg, complete these actions one at a time: Lift your foot, stretch your leg forward, touch the ground, move. Repeat with the right leg. Lifting, lifting, stretching, stretching, touching, moving.

counting rice

Separate the rice from the lentils. Keep a tally of each on a piece of paper.

looking at colour

Sitting in a chair, look at one of the primary colours, yellow, red, or blue. Motionless.

drinking water

With your hand, hold a glass of pure water. Wait and look at the water. In slow motion, bring the glass to your lips. Drink in small sips as long as you can.

About the artist

Marina Abramović (b. 1946) is a Serbian conceptual and performance artist, philanthropist, writer, and filmmaker. Describing herself as ‘the grandmother of performance art’, for over four decades her work has explored body art, endurance art and feminist art, the relationship between the performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind. In 2007, she founded the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), a non-profit foundation for performance art. Her works are held in collections globally, with her 1974 piece, Rhythm 0 forming part of Tate’s collection.
