At first glance, the docile kangaroos and joeys in Monro’s screenprint present a calm and pleasant image of the Australian landscape which wouldn’t be out of place in a children’s book. Upon closer inspection, however, we see that one of the red outlined bushes in the background conceals a hunter with their rifle aimed at a wide-eyed kangaroo.

Born in London, 1936, Nicholas Monro is an English sculptor, print-maker and art teacher, well known for both his brightly coloured prints and his large scale fiberglass sculptures. He is one of the few British pop artists who specialises in both sculpture and print.
