Additional Information

This photograph by Sunil Gupta is part of his series, Reflections of the Black Experience, which he undertook in London in the 1980s. This piece is an autobiographical image, showing Gupta and his white partner stood together outside the Coronet Cinema, Notting Hill Gate. The film that is being advertised on the outside of the cinema is the 1985 film My Beautiful Laundrette – a love story between an Asian man and a white man. The couple are unsmiling, but their pose is intimate, their heads touching as they meet the camera’s gaze.
