Additional Information

Ideal for a beach picnic, for wrapping up in to stave off the post-swim chill, or adding a St Ives Modernist touch to your home, this large soft blanket features a design inspired by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham’s Eight Lines, Porthmeor, 1986. Created with Atlantic Blankets, a Cornwall-based family company, it’s made of 100% recycled cotton.

The simplicity and elegance of the eight chalk lines in the artwork demonstrate Barns-Graham’s ability to reflect the chaos of nature within a formal structure. Porthmeor is the beach that Tate St Ives looks out on – an iconic part of the Cornish coastline.

About the maker

Atlantic Blankets are a family run small business located in Cornwall, UK. All of their blankets are designed in house and sustainably made in the British Isles, many using pre-dyed recycled materials from scrap. This process reduces greenhouse gases, conserves water, saves energy and negates the need for dyes and other harmful chemicals.

About the artist

Wilhelmina Barns-Graham CBE (1912 – 2004) was one of Britain’s foremost abstract artists. Born in St Andrews, Scotland, she moved to St Ives in 1940, where she became an influential figure in the group of modernist artists based in the town. Her paintings fused abstraction with representational imagery, often inspired by the dramatic Cornish landscapes and other places she visited. She was concerned with capturing the emotion of a place; of describing not just the formal qualities of landscape but the feelings evoked. From the 1960s, her work became markedly abstract, defined by strong geometric forms and a powerful dynamism. Later paintings were freer and more expressionistic.
