Additional Information

Although Katz is well known for his large-scale works, he usually begins each piece with a small oil painting from life, often en plein air – of this practice, he has said, "A sketch is very direct. It is working empirically, inside of an idea". Flowers have been a recurrent theme in this work since the 1960s, often during summer residencies in Maine.
