About the artwork
Alex Katz usually begins his large-scale paintings by creating a small study, sketched from life in oils. This painting is an example of this; it has many of the key characteristics of Katz’s body of work, such as the off-centred, cropped composition, flat use of colour and economy of detail, all in miniature form.
