Antony Cairns

Antony Cairns generously produced LDN3 _153. 2014 (negative date), 2018 on the occasion of the Tate Modern exhibition, Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art, 2 May 2018 – 14 October 2018 in support of Tate. Created as a limited edition of 50, each work is signed and numbered by the artist.

Growing up in the east end of London, and travelling to Los Angeles, New York and Tokyo, Cairns has been photographing the city as his main subject from the age of 15. Cairns uses analogue photography and shoots almost exclusively on black and white film. However the most characteristic aspect of Cairns work is in the printing process. He prints all his own work using chemical-based techniques and experiments with light distortions, printing surfaces, and even electronic ink from e-books. For his editions for Tate, two images taken in London have been printed using silk-screened ink onto silver metallic paper. Created as a limited edition of 50, each print is signed and numbered by the artist and comes unframed.

Antony Cairns (b.1980, London) works across photography, installation and sculpture. He studied photography at the London College of Printing, graduating in 2002. He was awarded the 2015 Hariban Award and received the Images Vevey Special Jury Prize in 2017.

Recent exhibitions include: TYO2- LDN4 at Roman Road, London (2017); A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age at George Eastman Museum, New York (2016); and LA-LV / LDN Process at Sfera Exhibition, Kyoto, Japan, as part of KYOTOGRAPHIE 2016. He is also participating in London Nights at the Museum of London. His work is held in a number of important British and European collections.
