Additional Information

Chris Ofili has created, Siesta of the Soul, 2010, a digital pigment print in an edition of 500, especially for Tate on the occasion of the major survey of the artist’s career at Tate Britain in 2010. Each work is signed and numbered, and includes Ofili’s poem of the same title:

A siesta of the soul elevating all that he is into invisible vapour, without sight, in flight.

The siesta of desire, a sleepwalk of fate tiptoeing on the chambers of his life force weightless past and breathless future. This spirit holds hands with his angel waiting to inhale his last dream of the lessons of the breeze.

Siesta, nemesis of gloom, slave of the sunset, mistress of the moonlight, insomnias fallen branch, shaded but not shrouded, summoning his dancing demons.

Chris Ofili (b. 1968, Manchester) is a British artist whose work engages with issues of black identity. He uses imagery with associations of racial stereotype as a means to challenge them. References within Ofili’s work derive from a wide spectrum from the bible to jazz and hip hop music, from Blake and Rodin to images of pornography. Ofili’s work is ostensibly powerful but also contains contrastingly themes of humour and vulnerability.

He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1998. By 2000 his work was in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Tate Gallery, London, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. He studied in London at Chelsea School of Art (1988–91) and the Royal College of Art (1991–3).
