Additional Information

In celebration of Women in Revolt! Art, Activism and the Women’s movement in the UK 1970 –1990, Christine Binnie has hand-thrown this Communal Cup ceramic pot, etched with ancient symbols and decorated with red ochre colours to invoke ‘a blessing and a protection’.

Neo Naturist artist Binnie decorates each cup using sgraffito techniques and coloured slip and glaze. She explains that the ‘Neolithic Matrilineal Symbols are taken from Maria Gimbutas book, The Language of the Goddess, along with a dark red rough glaze take us back to cave art and ancient women’s rituals.’

The cup would make a beautiful gift for a group of friends, as it is intended to be used as a shared object. As the artist says, ‘I would so love this beaker to bring people together in powerful sharing moments.’

As they’re hand-thrown, variations in size and design placement will occur, but the photograph above gives a good indication of what your large cup will look like.

To look after your ceramic cup, wipe clean only and definitely don’t put it in a dishwasher.

About the artist

Christine Binnie is a ceramicist and performance artist, best known for her activity as a founding member of the Neo Naturists group. Together with Jennifer Binnie and Wilma Johnson, Christine Binnie formed the collective in London in 1981, and created performances and appearances using body painting, found objects, art works and domestic items to create colourful subversive performance pieces staged in nightclubs and galleries. The group still perform together occasionally, and Binnie’s ceramic works explore many of the same themes as the Neo Naturists’ performances, challenging current social and political narratives.
