About the artist

Gillian Ayres (1930 – 2018) was a British abstract painter and printmaker. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1989, her work is characterised by its use of vibrant colours, with titles given to the pieces after completion. She often worked with thin vinyl paints and later oils in thick impasto. In recognition of her significant contribution to British art, she was appointed OBE and CBE, and was a Royal Academician. Her work is held in collections globally, and a number of her works form part of Tate’s collection.
