Additional Information

This set of three zip pouches each features a detail of an artwork by pioneering abstract artists, Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian.

In three sizes, the cases are handy for an array of uses – store and organize your art materials, toiletries or handbag contents. The smallest pouch is 13 x 23 cm and features af Klint’s Childhood, 1907 from Group IV, No. 2 The Ten Largest, the medium sized is patterned with Piet Mondrian’s New York City 3 (unfinished), 1941 and is 20 x 27 cm, and the largest bag is 25 x 32 cm, with af Klint’s monochromatic painting The Swan, 1914/15.

Made from water resistant recycled taffeta, the artwork details are printed onto the zip pockets using waterless printing techniques.

About the artists

Hilma af Klint (1862 – 1944) was a Swedish artist, considered to be the first abstract artist in Western art history. Talented in mathematics and botany, she studied painting at Tekniska skolan in Stockholm, and then the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. She initially painted landscapes, portraits and botanical illustrations, but from 1906 she began creating large scale abstract artworks as part of her explorations of theosophy and spiritualism. Believing herself to be guided by a higher power when creating these radically abstract works, she did not exhibit them in her lifetime, and left instructions for them not to be shown until two decades after her death. She is now recognized as a pioneer in abstraction, predating the works of Malevich, Kandinsky and Mondrian.

Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944) was a Dutch pioneer of abstract art and a founder of the De Stijl movement. During his lifetime he was celebrated for the purity of his abstract paintings and the methodical practice used to create them. Mondrian produced his most famous works from the 1920s, in his own style called Neo-Plasticism where he restricted his painting to a three colour palette and black grid system for which he is most famous. As well as being crucial to the development of modern art, his iconic abstract works still influence modern design and popular culture today.
