Jean Michel Basquiat Untitled skull vintage t-shirt

A rare find for British contemporary vintage company, Unified Goods, this Jean Michel Basquiat Untitled, 1982 t-shirt is from 2000, and was sourced in Chicago, USA. Basquiat t-shirts are seldom found in the vintage market, according to Unified Goods, making this faded pink t-shirt a valuable addition to a collection.

This t-shirt has been included in Unified Goods’ collection of vintage archival t-shirts and accessories for our 2020 Andy Warhol exhibition as an homage to Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat’s famously close relationship in the 1980s, both artistically and personally as friends. Their friendship is said to have begun when Basquiat approached Warhol in a restaurant and gave him a postcard of his work as an introductory gift. After their unsuccessful collaborative show Paintings, 1985, the pair became estranged, and tragically both died just a few years later.

A central figure in pop art, Andy Warhol (1928–87) was one of the most significant and influential artists of the later twentieth century. In the 1960s he began to explore the growing interplay between mass culture and the visual arts, and his constant experimentation with new processes for the dissemination of art played a pivotal role in redefining access to culture and art as we know it today.
