Additional Information

Jennifer Binnie has generously produced a limited edition print on the occasion of the exhibition, Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990, at Tate Britain, 8 November 2023 – 7 April 2024.

Girl Meditating in the Woods, 2023, is a linocut print, hand-made by Binnie. The tranquil scene, printed in black ink, is set against a background of hand-painted washes of colour which vary in each print, making each of them unique. Binnie has a deep relationship with the woods, growing up in the Sussex countryside and returning there after living in London in the 1980s. During her time in London she was part of the performance group the Neo Naturists who explored the radical and subversive potential of body painting. In their performances, they presented the nude, painted body in a celebratory and unselfconscious manner. The celebration of the body and a connectedness to nature are themes which reoccur often in Binnie’s practice, including in this unique limited edition print.

Each print is signed and numbered by the artist and comes unframed. Hand-painted background colours will vary. Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

About the Artist

Jennifer Binnie (b. 1958, East Sussex, UK) is a painter and performance artist. She studied at Eastbourne College of Art and Design and Portsmouth Polytechnic in the 1970s. During this time, Binnie expanded her painting practice into the areas of performance, film and sculpture though paint was always a strong element of her work and would be integrated into these other areas. Binnie moved to London in the early 1980s to share a squat with Grayson Perry, Christine Binnie, and Cerith Wyn Evans among others. In London she developed her painting alongside performance activities with the Neo Naturists, a performance art/cabaret group to which she was a central part along with Christine Binnie and Wilma Johnson. When the squat ended in the late 1980s, Binnie returned to her native East Sussex. The influence of her new surroundings came to inspire her paintings, conveying Binnie's passion for nature, animals and the Sussex landscape.

Binnie has exhibited widely, with notable shows held at Gallery 286, London, UK; The blackShed Gallery, East Sussex, UK; Kunstverein, Munich, Germany; Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, UK; and Everard Read Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2016 Studio Voltaire curated and hosted a retrospective of the Neo Naturists’ 1980s performances, the first historical survey of their work in a public gallery. She lives and works in East Sussex.
