Additional Information

In this 2021 piece, Lubaina Himid references The Gallery of HMS Calcutta (Portsmouth), c.1876 by James Tissot. Himid omits Tissot’s flirtatious naval officer in her depiction, focusing on the two women who stand together. Instead of Tissot’s docks, they look calmly out at the open sea ahead of them.

A Turner-prize winning artist, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire. Tate Modern held a major retrospective of her work in 2021-22, and several of her works are held in the collection.
