This painting is part of Himid’s Le Rodeur series of paintings, inspired by the traumatic events of the French slave ship of the same name in 1819. In the series, Himid does not try to accurately depict the action of what happened, but instead interprets the emotions appertaining to various parts of the story, and the sense of painful injustice and inequality are threaded throughout.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
