Two men are deep in conversation. One points to the other’s open hand, and the title makes us think he is reading his palm. It is no coincidence that they are impeccably dressed – Himid writes that her work sees her ‘Painting clothes for people in the process of making pivotal decisions… Men trying to decide on tiny decisions which may lead to huge commitment are dressed to the nines / Who is communicating with whom? Look at what they are wearing / What is the conversation? Read the colour and the pattern’.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
