In this piece from 2019, Himid continues to explore women’s creativity through her paintings. Here, the viewer is placed among a group of women deep in conversation and planning. The three women are discussing a map. The clothes they wear are important clues to their conversations ¬– Himid says of her paintings that ‘The dresses talk to each other sometimes: the colours are saying, “I am determined to do things my way but I need you to do what you want to do; how can we solve this”’ and “I am right but I will listen to you”’.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
