This piece comes from Lubaina Himid’s Kanga series of paintings, inspired by East African kanga garments. Like this piece, kanga usually feature patterned borders, with a centre made of a different design. A culturally significant item, it has many uses as a skirt, head-wrap, apron, pot-holder, towel, and more. They can be given as gifts on special occasions, and in Tanzania, they are often included as part of a support package for a bereaved family. Himid’s poignant piece features a pair of lungs, and ‘There could be an endless ocean’ reads underneath.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
