This piece is from a series of works on paper that Lubaina Himid made inspired by the sea. Ocean views are very often in Himid’s work, and in pieces like Tide Change, the artist is ‘trying to find many different ways of showing water’. This piece in pastels captures the vitality and movement of the sea in motion.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
