Additional Information

Statement jewellery designer Julia de Klerk has created this bold, bright and abstract Perspex necklace for us, to celebrate our Sophie Taeuber-Arp exhibition at Tate Modern.

Inspired by Taeuber-Arp’s Elementary Forms: Vertical-Horizontal Composition series, it uses Taeuber-Arp’s shapes to create an exciting piece of statement jewellery. Only available from Tate, it’s part of our exclusive collection of homeware, art prints and accessories lauding Sophie Taeuber-Arp and the 2021 Tate Modern exhibition dedicated to her.

The necklace measures 32 x 8 cm, and is made from lightweight frosted acrylic and sterling silver findings. To prevent any tarnishing, polish with a silver cloth.

Julia de Klerk’s studio is in Hampshire, UK. She studied BA (Hons) Design at Goldsmiths University of London and shortly after graduating took up a number of short courses specialising in Jewellery at Central St Martins. Julia’s design style reflects her love of colour and pattern, and her graphic inspired influences, love of colour and experiments with textured acrylic have created her distinctive style.

Julia only uses recycled or Perspex brand acrylic for her jewellery due to the company’s ongoing investments in environmental manufacturing efficiency. All of her work is made to order to reduce material waste, and her packaging is 100% recyclable and sourced within the UK. All acrylic and silver offcuts created in the making process are collected and recycled, and she has invested in new equipment to enable her to recycle her acrylic offcuts herself, creating recycled sheet material for future jewellery projects.

About the artist

Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) was an artist but also a dancer, designer, puppet maker, architect and editor. A true pioneer of modern art, she became a teacher after studying art and dance and later taught others how to design patterns for textiles. She ‘lived abstraction’, and became one of the most important concrete and geometric abstract artists. Responsible for co-founding the dada art movement, Tauber-Arp’s way with colours and shapes unlocked new possibilities in art, costume and interior design.
