Additional Information

This piece, created by Thalia Campbell to be hung on the perimeter railings at the Greenham Common peace camp, is illustrated with motifs detailing features of life at the peace camp. In striking colours, complete with ornamental fringing, it shows some necessities for the protesters, including tents, a campfire, and bolt-cutters. Campbell has said that she came up with the idea to make the banners when facing the unsympathetic and misogynistic press – deciding to fight them with beauty. In an interview with Its Nice That, she described the textiles as ‘art, politics and sewing all wrapped up in one beautiful parcel.’

Please note that the largest available size option for this print is 45 x 60 cm.

Thalia Campbell (born 1937) is a retired teacher and lecturer, and an activist best known as one of the founders of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp. Her political awareness was influenced by her grandmother’s accounts of the Suffragettes clashes with the police in early 20th century London. After having 4 children, moving to Wales and completing an art degree at Aberystwyth, she co-founded the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, and became the chief banner-maker for the anti-nuclear camp and march.
