This work was produced during the same month that Van Gogh created another work featuring the night sky, Café Terrace at Night, 1888. He was fascinated by the rich colours and structural shapes that presented themselves in the darkness.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is considered one of the most influential post-impressionist artists in the history of Western art. During his short yet prolific career he developed a highly personal use of colour and brushwork, directly expressing an emotional response to his subject and his inner world.
