About the artwork
Morris’s passion for horticulture made him an impressive breeder of irises. He grew approximately 1,000 seedlings each year, and produced and registered at least 90 new varieties. The year this work was painted, 1943, yielded a particularly beautiful crop. Morris places some of these into a jug and painted them quickly enough for the painting to be completed before the flowers withered.
